2027 elections: INEC raises alarm over deepfakes, AI-generated fake news

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised concerns over the growing threat of artificial intelligence (AI)-driven disinformation, deepfakes and other forms of digital manipulation to the credibility of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan, said emerging digital technologies had created new vulnerabilities for electoral processes, warning that manipulated videos, cloned voices, fabricated images and coordinated online campaigns could undermine public trust in democratic institutions.
