CBN pumps N5.21trn into banks as government seeks to borrow N700bn via T-bills

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has released N5.21 trillion into the banking system within one week, ahead of a N700 billion Treasury Bills auction scheduled for today, Wednesday, August 12, 2026.
The N700 billion Treasury Bills auction means the federal government is offering short-term government debt securities to investors and banks.
Those who buy them are essentially lending money to the government for a specified period and earning interest in return.
The N5.21 trillion released by the CBN could give banks more money to lend, invest or use to buy government securities, including the Treasury Bills.
