Crypto platforms that survive Nigeria’s next regulatory phase will be the ones built for scrutiny

Regulation has a way of arriving slowly and then all at once. For much of the past decade, Nigeria’s cryptocurrency market operated in a space where the rules were unclear enough that operators could make their own judgements about compliance, transparency and accountability. That space is closing.
The Securities and Exchange Commission and the Central Bank of Nigeria have been steadily building the architecture of a regulated digital asset environment, and what is becoming increasingly obvious is that the platforms which treated compliance as optional were not buying themselves freedom.
