As the global community marks this year’s World Mental Health Day on October 10, attention is increasingly shifting from long-stay psychiatric institutions towards community-based, person-centred mental healthcare.
With the theme, “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change,” the World Health Organisation (WHO) is calling for greater recognition of the experiences and expertise of people living with mental health conditions.
The organisation has also warned that institutional care can be isolating and is too often associated with poor-quality services, coercion and violations of human rights.
