The Netherlands has returned a stolen Benin artefact to the Benin Kingdom, 129 years after British soldiers looted thousands of treasures during the 1897 invasion.
The historic piece was formally presented at the Oba’s palace in Benin City on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.
The handover coincided with celebrations marking the 10th anniversary of the coronation of the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II.
