Niger: ‘I am just chief security by mouth’ — Bago speaks on mining crisis

Niger State Governor Umaru Bago has expressed frustration over the limits of his authority in dealing with security agencies and the mining crisis in the state, saying he has little control over federal detention facilities.
Bago made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics while speaking about the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners in NSCDC custody.
The governor said the state government was not informed before the suspected miners were arrested and detained following anti-illegal mining operations in the M.I. Wushishi and Lukoto areas of the state.
