The presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has lamented the rising level of poverty in Nigeria, saying millions of citizens are struggling to afford food, access healthcare and meet their basic needs.
Obi made this known in a statement shared on his X account to mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, where he criticised the country’s worsening economic conditions and called for urgent measures to improve the living standards of Nigerians.
He cited figures indicating that Nigeria’s poverty rate rose from 40.1 per cent in 2019 to 56.2 per cent in 2023, with projections suggesting it could reach 63 per cent in 2026.
