Women and work in Nigeria: Beyond participation to decent employment

Nigeria’s population reached an estimated 232.7 million in 2024, with women and girls accounting for nearly half (49.4%) of the population. Across agriculture, trade, education, healthcare, retail, and entrepreneurship, women play a vital role in supporting households and driving economic activity. However, despite their significant contributions, many remain trapped in low-paying, insecure jobs with limited opportunities for career growth.
