World Cup: USA beat Australia 2-0 to move closer to knockout stage

The United States took a major step towards the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Australia 2-0 in a dominant Group D performance at Seattle Stadium on Friday.
Playing without injured captain Christian Pulisic, the co-hosts controlled proceedings from the outset and opened the scoring in the 11th minute when Australia defender Cameron Burgess diverted Folarin Balogun’s cross into his own net.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side doubled their advantage just before half-time as Alex Freeman headed home after reacting quickest to a deflected Sergino Dest effort. The goal was initially ruled out for offside but was awarded following a VAR review.
